Common Mistakes About Novice Speakers

- Apr 01, 2020-

At present, there are many types of speakers on the market, and evaluations around various speakers are endless. Many novices tend to pay too much attention to the one-sidedness of the speaker when selecting a speaker. There are even certain misunderstandings in the speaker's perception, which makes it impossible to buy a suitable speaker Equipment, today we will take a look at the common mistakes when novices choose speakers.

1.Use of famous speakers = good sound quality

This equation holds in some cases: the manufacturer's package is used (the woofer and crossover must be included) and the cabinet volume and structure are selected according to the official. This situation is equivalent to the technical support provided by the manufacturer, and it can generally achieve good results by doing it carefully. If you do not use the official crossover provided by the speaker, the sound quality is good or not, and the effect depends on the level of the speaker designer and manufacturer, and it has nothing to do with the brand-name speaker itself.

2.using enough feet = good sound quality

Which is better, gold or steel? There is a story that illustrates the problem: Guangzhou Haiyin Electric Factory in the 1990s, domestic amplifiers and imported amplifiers were sold. At that time, domestic amplifiers were opened to attract customers. You see, I used eight Sanken tube, 500W large ring cow, 20000uF filter capacitor, one amplifier is 60 kg; and a second-hand Cambridge amplifier: 4 power tubes, 100W cattle, 8200uF filter capacitor, 20 kg; but one domestic amplifier Defeated, even the boss selling domestic machines has nothing to say. So the premise of this equation is that the company's technology has reached a high level. Otherwise, many technically good companies' products will not look good, but the results will be shocking, because others use good steel on the blade.

3. The sound quality is only related to the speakers used

This is absolutely wrong. Every speaker has potential, and a high level of designers can often fully realize its potential. For example, there are many famous factories with hundreds of thousands of boxes using Hivi, which is significantly higher than the Hivi factory's own boxes made with the same speakers. This is the power of speaker design and crossover.

4. Many people say OK = OK

It is possible, but not necessarily. Many times, everyone's hearing is different, and what they are pursuing is also different. The speaker is very personal. It may not be what you like. There is a famous saying in this industry: ears receive goods. Just look for what you like. If you can't hear it, see if its product characteristics are to your appetite, and if his idea is what you want. In general, look at why others like this product, and whether you have such a hobby before deciding.

5. You can use a good speaker, the crossover is okay.

This is absolutely wrong. You can check the frequency divider of the famous box. There is no easy way. The frequency divider is not less important to the speaker than the speaker. The reason is simple: the output of the amplifier goes to the crossover and then to the speaker. The crossover determines the distribution of energy and frequency between the speakers of the speaker, and the effect on the sound quality can be imagined. For a more direct example, a medium speaker can use 50% of its skills, but a good designer can use 80-9% of its skills, so it is likely to use a higher-level speaker than ordinary designers Only five successful speakers are better.

6. Electronic frequency division is better than power frequency division.

These are two different frequency division methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages, mainly depending on the orientation of the speaker designer.

Electronic crossover:

Advantages: less high and low crosstalk, well-designed electronic crossover sound sounds cleaner.

Disadvantages: The design is complicated, and two additional amplifiers and audio cables are added, which increases the cost.

Power divider:

Advantages: simple, high reliability, adjustable tone, universal.

Disadvantages: The internal resistance of the frequency divider inductor and capacitor will affect the damping coefficient of the speaker, thereby affecting the effect.

7.heavy speakers are good

Heavy speakers have at least one benefit: they are not prone to vibration, and the materials may be sufficient, but that's just the benefit. The weight of the speaker is determined by the thickness of the plate and the weight of the speaker. The thickness of the speaker is beneficial to the low frequency of the speaker, but you must also pay attention to the tightness of the speaker case. If the speaker board is very thick but there is a leak, it is useless; It doesn't have much to do with the sound quality, we still have to look at all aspects of the box comprehensively.

8. Large-caliber speakers have good sound quality

If the bass of a large-caliber speaker is good, it may be more appropriate, of course, when it is properly designed. The speakers made by 3-inch and 4-inch speakers often sound thinner than that of 5, 6-inch speakers due to the lack of low-frequency parts, so when you want to design a small box, you usually pay special attention to the low-end balance of the human voice. It is difficult to say whether the box of the large-diameter speaker of the middle and high-frequency speakers is good. Generally, the larger the size of the woofer, the lower the high-frequency cut-off frequency. The middle- and high-frequency part of the speaker depends on the tweeter. Many large-caliber boxes have a midrange speaker for this reason.

9.full range speakers are nice

Many people will feel this way. This is for a reason. First of all, compared to the two-unit box, the full-range speaker has only one sounding point, the phase is accurate, and many full-range speaker manufacturers have already tuned the sound. You can directly install the speaker without a crossover, which reduces a lot of trouble. Compared with a poorly designed two-way speaker, a full-range speaker can at least maintain a certain quality. But often the full-range speaker's frequency band is not wide enough, and the high and low frequencies will feel insufficient, so from the perspective of HiFi, there is still dissatisfaction.
